In 1957, all Mercurys are based on the same 3.10 m/122 in.-long wheelbase with one V8 engine (either a in 5.1-litre or a 6-litre). The top-of-the-range Turnpike, with unusual air intakes above the windscreen, was released that year in sedan, coupe or convertible (the latter being reproduced here). Originally, the Comet should have been an Edsel model, but this brand founded by Ford in 1958 was such a flop that the group decided to launch this model as a Mercury, after a two-year period, in 1960 and 1961, when it was sold without any badge. This Comet is a third generation, released in 1966. This sporty-looking hardtop coupe version is called Cyclone.
